Nurses: Earn 5 CECs and Learn to Protect Yourself from Potentially Violent Patients

Many nurses learn restraint and seclusion techniques in school.  While those skills are unquestionably necessary in some situations, there are numerous other situations where nurses can prevent the frustration that ultimately leads to violence through communication.  However, learning how to talk with angry patients takes a lot of practice.  Very few people master this without years of immersion in these types of situations—like veteran psychiatric nurses.

Mary Johnson, PhD and Penny Hauser, MSN conducted a study to explore the uncanny de-escalation abilities of veteran psychiatric nurses. These researchers found that the experienced de-escalators shared similar experiences. All experienced memorable, high-stress events.  These events caused them to go through a paradigm shift.  They didn’t wake up one day suddenly able to talk a mentally ill patient off the ledge.  They just had enough trial and error—enough practice—to get really good at calming patients.

Of course, personally handling situations is the best (and least pleasant) way to learn how to deal with violent patients. Through this training you will have the opportunity to learn from simulated experience.

In this course, we will explore strategies to maintain a safe workplace for nurses. We will pay special attention to violence-prevention approaches to utilize when working with adolescent and young adult patients (ages 13-24). After you complete the training, you will be able to:

  • Articulate prevalence, risk factors, and causes of violence in healthcare settings
  • Describe communication-based violence prevention strategies
  • Detail a stage-specific approach to diffuse a violent situation
  • Describe steps to respond in the event of a violent situation

You will be asked to complete a 10-question assessment at the end of the training. If you receive a score of 70 percent (7 out of 10) or better, you will receive a certificate of completion. If you do not receive a score of 70 percent or better, you will be asked to review this information again and retake the quiz. Certificates of completion can be submitted to your certifying organization or state licensing board
